Special Educational Needs Programme

Our Aim

This programme helps children with learning difficulties gain important safety skills and work towards living a more independent life.

Who We Educate

The programme caters for students between 11 and 19 years of age with a range of additional needs.

How is the Programme Taught

The Centre provides an environment where pupils can learn and practice safety skills in a realistic and practical way. The realistic scenarios simulate everyday problems and allow pupils to learn how to deal with them whilst in a safe environment. This could range from crossing the road to reacting to a house fire. The children work in small groups with either a Volunteer Guide or a member of staff from the school who has been trained to use the Centre (see Training to Use the Centre). We generally ask that a member of school staff should accompany each group in order to support the students’ learning. Teachers can choose which scenarios to include in order to tailor sessions to each groups' needs. Each session will last around 2 hours.

Session Details

Lifeskills can accommodate a maximum of 20 children per session. There is currently no charge for these sessions however, you will need to arrange and pay for your own transport.
Sessions run from 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm. Please arrive at the Centre 15 minutes before the session starts.

Booking Details

Letters are sent annually to all special schools in the area confirming when bookings for the following year can be made. Please note that bookings can only be made by calling the Lifeskills office on 0117 9224511. Sessions tend to fill up very quickly so please call early to avoid disappointment.

Training to Use the Centre

Teaching staff must attend a day's training before they can run a session. This will introduce you to all the facilities available at the Centre, show you how they can be used and allow you to share ideas with fellow professionals. There is also the opportunity to look at accessible resources.

If you would like more information on our training courses, please call 0117 9224511.
